Sonata (2015) for clarinet and piano. 10 min.
This is one of the first pieces I wrote during my undergraduate degree at Rutgers. I had played the Poulenc Sonata, the Bernstein Sonata, the Saint-Saëns Sonata, and Muczynski’s Time Pieces in my clarinet lessons, and I decided to write my own sonata. I did not want to be limited by my own playing ability while writing this, so I wrote it without intending to perform it myself. I attempted to create melodic material that used the opening four notes of the clarinet throughout the piece.
Special Thanks to Mark Allen Jr. and Jose Maria Espinosa Zuniga for premiering this piece! Watch the premiere performance below.
